Jeremy Stoppelman is the co-founder and CEO of Yelp.
Stoppelman grew up in Virginia and took an interest in business in computers at a young age. At 14, he invested in his first stocks and aspired to become a video game developer.
After graduating with a degree in computer engineering, Stoppelman took a job at Excite@Home Network. He worked there for just four months before moving on to X.com (which later became PayPal) as vice president of engineering. He left the company to attend Harvard Business School.
The idea for Yelp came about during a summer internship at MRL Ventures in 2004. Stoppelman had come down with the flu and was struggling to find a local doctor. After brainstorming with a former PayPal colleague, Russel Simmons, who was also at MRL Ventures, the pair came up with the idea for an online community that could share reviews and recommendations.
After securing $1 million in seed money from another former PayPal colleague, Max Levchin, Stoppelman and Simmons took Yelp live. The idea behind the company was to become the online successor to the Yellow Pages.
In 2010, Steve Jobs convinced Stoppelman to turn down an acquisition offer from Google, and in 2012, Yelp went public. Under Stoppelman’s leadership, the company has become a trusted platform with over 200 million user-submitted reviews.
Stoppelman is an avid Yelp reviewer, or “Yelper,” himself, reviewing under the username, “Big Papa.” He is known as a hands-on CEO, with his desk situated in the midst of Yelp’s open-office floor plan. He has been recognized by Fast Company as one of the “Most Creative People in the Business Community,” and by Fortune as one of its “40 Under 40” in 2013.
He earned his B.S. in computer engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
