George Mattson is the Co-Founder of NextGen Acquisition Corp. I & II, two special purpose acquisition companies. In December 2021, NextGen Acquisition Corp. II completed a business combination with Virgin Orbit, a space launch and satellite services company, in a transaction valuing the combined company at $3.4 billion. In August 2021, NextGen Acquisition Corp. I completed a business combination with Xos, Inc, a leading manufacturer of fully electric Class 5 to Class 8 commercial vehicles, in a transaction valuing the combined company at $2 billion. Mr. Mattson currently serves as lead independent director of Xos and also serves on the board of Virgin Orbit.
Previously, Mr. Mattson was a Partner at Goldman Sachs, where he formed and was the Co-Head of the Global Industrials Group. Additionally, he also served on the Investment Banking Division Operating Committee, the Investment Banking Division Client and Business Standards Committee, and the Global Recruiting Council.
Since his departure from Goldman Sachs in 2012, Mr. Mattson has made control investments in lower middle market private industrial companies with a focus on partnering with founders and management teams to provide growth capital and help realize their strategic vision.
In addition to having served as Co-Chairman of NextGen I (NGAC) and NextGen II (NGCA), Mr. Mattson also serves as a director of Delta Air Lines, Inc. (DAL), where he serves as Chairman of the Finance Committee, Xos, Inc. (XOS), where serves as lead independent director, Virgin Orbit Holdings, Inc. (VORB), and Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc. (SPCE). He joined the board of Virgin Galactic in conjunction with the completion of Virgin Galactic’s business combination with Social Capital Hedosophia Holdings Corp., a special purpose acquisition company formed in 2017. Mr. Mattson also previously served on the board of Air France KLM Group.
In addition, Mr. Mattson serves as an Executive Partner of Comvest Partners, a leading middle market private equity, and credit investment firm, and as an Operating Partner of Star Mountain Capital, a specialized asset management firm focused on lower middle market credit. Mr. Mattson holds a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Duke University and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
