David Duffield is the co-founder and chairman of the board of Workday, a leading provider of enterprise cloud applications for finance, HR, and planning.
He founded Workday with Aneel Bhusri, who served as vice chair and head of product strategy at Duffield’s former company, PeopleSoft.
Workday provides financial management, human capital management, and analytics applications to some of the world’s largest companies, institutions and agencies. Duffield brings over 50 years of experience in the industry, with a focus on business management, the public sector and higher education software industries.
Prior to Workday, Duffield founded PeopleSoft where he served as CEO and board chairman. PeopleSoft became the second-largest ERP application software company in the world before it was acquired by Oracle in 2005.
Additionally, he founded two mainframe application software companies—Integral Systems and Information Associates. He started his career out of college at IBM, working as a marketing representative and systems engineer.
Duffield earned both his bachelor’s degree in engineering and his M.B.A. from Cornell University.
He and his family are the benefactors of Cornell’s Duffield Hall, a nanoscale science and engineering facility. They are also known for their commitment to animal welfare causes. In 1994, they established the Duffield Family Foundation, which was later renamed Maddie’s Fund in honor of a miniature schnauzer the family owned for ten years. They have endowed the fund with more than $300 million, with the goal of promoting a no-kill nation. The Duffields are estimated to have given more of their personal wealth toward animal welfare than anyone else.
Duffield has been recognized on the Forbes World’s Richest People List. He and his wife Cheryl live near Lake Tahoe.
