Muneer Satter is the chairman of Satter Investment Management, a Chicago-based private investment firm.
In 2012, Satter retired from a 16-year career as a partner with Goldman Sachs in the merchant banking division. Since that time, he has run Satter Investment Management and the Satter Family Foundation with a focus on investing in life sciences and medical technology companies.
Satter first joined Goldman Sachs in 1988, and he soon after moved to London to start and co-head the firm’s European merchant banking group. He later moved back to New York as the global head of the mezzanine group. In that role, he raised and managed over $30 billion in assets and helped the fund achieve a compound annual return of 12.9 percent for the 16 years he managed it.
Satter’s past career includes a number of leadership roles at various companies, including co-chairman of Lottery Innovations LLC, chairman of Aerpio Therapeutics Inc, CEO of Inspiration Biopharmaceuticals, independent director of Vital Therapies Inc. and chairman of Aerpio Pharmaceuticals Inc.
Satter also donates millions of dollars each year through Satter Investment Management and the Satter Family Foundation. Beneficiaries include GS Gives (Goldman Sachs’ charitable giving branch), NatureVest, the United States Military (where he sits on the board of the Navy SEAL Foundation), the TNC’s financial committee, and his alma mater, Northwestern University. Satter also served on the Room to Read board of directors from 2004 to 2010, and he was co-chair from 2005 to 2008.
Satter has a keen interest in politics and public policy, evidenced by his status as a board advisor to prominent American think tanks, the American Enterprise Institute and the Council on Foreign Relations. He is also on the board of World Business Chicago, chaired by Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel. Additionally, Satter served as co-chairman of the National Finance Committee for Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign in 2012, as well as chairman of Romney’s Illinois Finance Committee. In 2015, Satter was named one of the 20 Most Powerful Political insiders in Illinois by Crain’s Chicago Business.
Satter received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and his M.B.A. and J.D. from Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School, respectively. Satter lives in Chicago with his wife and five daughters.
