Alfred Kelly Jr. is the chairman and CEO of Visa.
Kelly first joined the credit card giant in 2014 as an independent director. In 2016, he was named CEO, and in 2019, he was elected chairman of the board.
The majority of Kelly’s career was spent at American Express, where he held a variety of positions from 1987 to 2010, including president and head of AmEx's global consumer group. After leaving AmEx, Kelly spent some time outside the corporate world, assuming the role of chairman, president and CEO for the New York/New Jersey Super Bowl host committee from 2011 to 2014. As head of the committee, he helped plan and organize Super Bowl XLVIII. The host committee also planned numerous charitable events, including the Super Community Blood Drive, the Snowflake Youth Foundation and the Urban Forestry Project, which planted some 25,000 trees in the area that was damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
In 2015, while serving as a management advisor for TowerBrook Capital, Kelly became the chairman of the papal visit committee handling Pope Francis’ visit to New York. Immediately prior to Visa, Kelly served as CEO of Alphabet-backed Intersection, a technology and digital media company based in New York City.
His career began at PepsiCo in 1981, where he held positions in financial planning and information systems. In 1984, when President Ronald Reagan won re-election, a 27-year-old Kelly was tapped to serve as the head of information systems at the White House, where he worked from 1985 to 1987 before joining American Express.
Kelly currently serves on the boards of Catalyst and Visa, along with several organizations in the Archdiocese of New York. Additionally, he is the chairman of the board of the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation and a trustee of New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Boston College.
A graduate of Iona College, Kelly earned both his bachelor’s degree in computer and information science and his M.B.A. from the institution.
