Bruce Berkowitz is a well-known value investor and the founder and chief investment officer of Fairholme Capital Management, as well as president and director of Fairholme Funds, Inc.

Berkowitz founded Fairholme Capital Management in 1997 as an investment advisor registered with the SEC. Two years later he founded Fairholme Funds, Inc., a SEC-registered investment company providing investment management services to three mutual funds.

The lauded value investor is known for investing in companies with reliable cash flows that are trading at attractive levels relative to those cash flows. Berkowitz is a strong believer in business cycles and looks for companies that are out of public favor due to their current position within the cycle. Fairholme’s funds under management peaked at $20 billion in 2011.

Berkowitz was recognized as Morningstar’s Domestic-Stock Fund Manager of the Year in 2009, as well as Domestic-Stock Fund Manager of the Decade. Institutional Investor Magazine named him Money Manager of the Year in 2013.

Berkowitz began his career at the consulting firm Strategic Planning Institute in 1980, followed by roles at investment firms Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers, and Smith Barney Investment Advisors, where he was the managing director and senior portfolio manager.

Berkowitz earned his B.A. in economics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is also a director and chairman of the board for the St. Joe Company. He previously served on the boards of Sears, White Mountains Insurance Group, and AmeriCredit Corp., among others.
