Michael Ray is the former CEO of Vera Bradley. He retired from the women’s luggage and handbag design company in 2013.

Ray joined Vera Bradley in 1998 as the company’s director of finance. He rose through the company to the role of national sales director in 1999, executive vice president of sales and marketing in 2004, and CEO in 2007.

Under his leadership, Ray led Vera Bradley’s pivot from a niche accessories designer to a multichannel business with broad demographic appeal. Ray strengthened Vera Bradley’s sourcing, warehousing, and distribution infrastructure and expanded the company’s retail presence including entering the Japanese market.

Ray led Vera Bradley to its IPO in 2010. During his time with the company, revenue grew from $18 million in 1998 to $541 million in 2013. Additionally, it grew from 40 employees to 2,400 during that same time frame.

Ray began his career at accounting firm Coopers & Lybrand. He currently serves on the board of directors of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Foundation, the Seaside School Foundation, and the Ball State University Foundation. He also serves on the board of governors of the Riley Children’s Foundation.

Ray holds a bachelor of applied science degree in accounting and computer science from Ball State University.

The company sells its Vera Bradley branded products through its full-line and outlet stores in the United States; verabradley.com, an online outlet site; its annual outlet sale in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It sells its Pura Vida branded products through wholesale retailers and Pura Vida websites, including www.puravidabracelets.com, www.puravidabracelets.eu, and www.puravidabracelets.ca; and Vera Bradley Indirect branded products to specialty retail locations, department stores, national accounts, third party e-commerce sites, third-party inventory liquidators, and through licensing agreements.
