Dr. Wentz is a globally renowned microbiologist, immunologist, and pioneer in the development of human cell culture technology and infectious disease diagnoses. His career trajectory was inspired by a passion for the life sciences and his personal experiences, including his father’s death from heart disease when he was just 17, as well as other family members who suffered from degenerative diseases.
In 1974, he started Gull Laboratories, where he developed many of the world’s first FDA-approved laboratory assays for viral diseases. He is best known for the development of the Epstein-Barr diagnostic test, which remains the world’s gold standard for diagnosing that virus.
Dr. Wentz went on to sell the controlling interest in Gull Laboratories to a German medical products firm, and in 1992, he created USANA Health Sciences. His goal was to fight degenerative diseases through the development of advanced nutritional products. In 2000, he founded Sanoviv Medical Institute, a model holistic and integrative medical center in Baja California, Mexico.
Dr. Wentz authored A Mouth Full of Poison, Invisible Miracles, and co-authored the best-selling book, The Healthy Home. He is also the author of numerous scientific papers. In honor of his commitment to philanthropy, he was the inspiration for the USANA Foundation, a charity focused on helping those suffering from hunger and malnutrition. Dr Wentz founded the Wentz Medical Center and Laboratory in Uganda, as well as the Wentz Medical Center in Cambodia, both of which serve children orphaned by diseases like HIV and malaria. He has also worked with the Children’s Hunger Fund to establish medical centers in other underserved countries and regions.
He also helped fund the creation of several Mercy Centers and has pledged funds for more to be established. Additionally, Dr. Wentz is a generous donor to his alma mater, North Central College.
