Larry Renfro is Managing Partner of Optum Ventures, an early-stage firm focused on emerging health care technology, analytics, and services companies with transformative capabilities to make health care better for everyone. Under Mr. Renfro’s leadership, Optum Ventures is accelerating UnitedHealth Group’s innovation capacities and reach through a series of domestic and international funds with a current total investment commitment of $600 million.
In addition to Optum Ventures, Mr. Renfro was named Vice Chairman of UnitedHealth Group in November 2017. In this role he maintains oversight responsibility for all enterprise strategic relationships, key client relationships and company-wide business growth efforts.
From 2011 through 2017, Mr. Renfro served as Chief Executive Officer of Optum, UnitedHealth Group’s health services platform, overseeing OptumInsight, OptumHealth and OptumRx. Under Mr. Renfro’s leadership, Optum was transformed from a $27 billion health services platform to an over $90 billion industry leader in 2017. Before leading Optum, Mr. Renfro served as Chief Executive Officer of UnitedHealthcare Public and Senior Markets Group, which included the businesses serving government-sponsored health programs (now known as UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement and UnitedHealthcare Community & State).
Prior to joining UnitedHealth Group, Mr. Renfro served as President, Fidelity Developing Businesses at Fidelity Investments, as well as President of Fidelity Retail Services and a managing director of FMR Corp., the holding company for Fidelity’s businesses. Mr. Renfro also worked at the firm from 1981 to 1988, holding a number of senior executive positions.
From 2005 until 2008, Mr. Renfro served as Chief Operating Officer for AARP Services and President and Chief Executive Officer of AARP Services. He also was appointed President of AARP Financial, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AARP Services, Inc. Mr. Renfro was a key architect of creating AARP Financial, the AARP Funds and the programs pursued by AARP Financial.
Mr. Renfro has spent more than 25 years as a Financial Services Executive, including leadership positions with Devonshire Financial Group, NewRiver, Inc., Allmerica Financial, State Street Bank & Trust Company and Boston Financial Data Services. Mr. Renfro received his Bachelor of Science degree from Western Kentucky University.
