Travis Kalanick is the co-founder and former CEO of ride-hailing company, Uber.
From an early age, Kalanick was interested in computers, learning how to code by the time he was in middle school. He studied computer engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles, but dropped out to help launch the startup, Sour, with some of his fellow classmates. Sour was one of the first online music and movie sharing services of its kind, but it filed for bankruptcy in 2000, later selling off all of its assets.
In 2001, Kalanick launched another file-sharing company, Red Swoosh, which eventually sold to Akamai Technologies in 2007 for $19 million. After Red Swoosh's acquisition, Kalanick spent a year with Akamai as head of P2P initiatives before leaving to start Uber.
Along with Garrett Camp, he co-founded Uber in 2009 with just three cars available for hire in the San Francisco area. From its humble beginnings, Uber grew to a massive international company, expanding overseas by 2012 and operating in 66 countries and more than 360 cities worldwide by 2015.
In 2016, Kalanick announced that he would be joining President-elect Donald Trump’s economic advisory council, a move met with swift backlash against both the company and Kalanick personally. Additionally, in 2017, he underwent an investigation into sexual harassment and discrimination charges leveled against the company, ultimately leading to his resignation. By 2019, he had sold all shares of Uber.
After his departure from Uber, Kalanick embarked on a new venture called 10100, a firm that combines nonprofit and for-profit investments. 10100 now focused on e-commerce and real estate. Additionally, he currently serves as CEO of City Storage Systems, a holding company with a focus on redeveloping real estate.
