Garrett Camp is the founder of the popular ride hailing service, Uber, which he started with Travis Kalanick in 2009.
A serial entrepreneur and billionaire, Camp has founded a number of companies over his career, including StumbleUpon, Uber, and Expa. He is currently working on a cryptocurrency called Eco.
In mid-2010, Camp and Kalanick, who went on to be Uber’s CEO, launched the company in the San Francisco area with just a few cars. By late 2010, the transportation company had raised $1.2 million in angel founding, and soon expanded to other cities. In 2012, Camp helped launch UberX and UberSUV to offer lower-cost ride options to customers. UberTaxi was introduced later that same year, which allowed drivers to charge taxi-like fare to those looking for a ride. By 2013, the company had introduced a ride share option that brought the price per ride even lower. Camp served as chairman of Uber’s board until stepping down to an observer role in March of 2020.
While still attending university, Camp launched his first company, StumbleUpon, in 2001. The content company works like a search engine personalized to match the interests of its users. The company moved to the San Francisco area in 2006 after successfully securing investor funding, and it sold to eBay in 2007 for $75 million. By 2009, StumbleUpon was independent again, and Camp signed on again as CEO, increasing its user base to over 25 million users by 2012. Camp stepped down as CEO later that year, ending his run as chairman of the company in 2014.
One of Camp’s newest ventures is Expa, which he founded in 2013. Expa is a global network of entrepreneurs that helps them create and launch businesses. Since its inception, Expa has successfully launched dozens of ventures and raised funding of $150 million.
In 2015, Camp launched another content discovery similar to StumbleUpon, this time called Mix.com. The platform is a place to discover the most compelling content, according to Camp. Mix is part of Camp’s Expa initiative and operates in tandem with StumbleUpon.
Another one of his Expa initiatives is Eco, a take on cryptocurrency designed to fix the regulation and power problems that afflict many current cryptocurrency offerings. If the venture is successful, Eco is poised to become the much-needed connection in the cryptocurrency world between fully regulated and fully unregulated monetary systems.
Camp earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Calgary in his native Canada.
