Jim combines his lifelong love of communications with a deep understanding of our business to enhance our reputation with a variety of stakeholders. He has helped forge innovative partnerships with environmental groups across the U.S. to support our mission and help shape the way the outside world views our company.

Jim began his career with ScottsMiracle-Gro in 2001 as director of investor relations and corporate communications. He currently serves as executive vice president and chief communications officer responsible for leading the company’s investor relations, government relations, public affairs, corporate responsibility and community relations activities, a position he has held since June 2008.

Jim also is president of The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation, a role he’s served since its creation in 2017.

Prior to joining ScottsMiracle-Gro, Jim was vice president of investor relations with the consulting firm of Edward Howard & Co. in Cleveland, Ohio, and manager of investor and media relations at American Greetings Corp. in Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to those roles, he was a nationally recognized business journalist.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism and an MBA at Kent State University, where he has served on the Board of Advisors of the university’s School of Journalism & Mass Communications. He was also the John Hughes Fellow at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at the University of Delaware.

Outside of the office, Jim loves spending time with his family, usually golfing or boating. His perfect weekend night is dinner and a good bottle of wine with his wife and friends. On many of those occasions, you’ll find him in the kitchen prepping and cooking the meal. Along with writing, he finds cooking a great creative release.

Jim’s first memory of gardening was watching his grandfather tend the small flower bed in front of his house. Purple and white tulips still remind Jim of his grandfather and why he loved gardening, which he still does today.
