Julie Wainwright is the founder, chairman and CEO of The RealReal, a luxury consignment company.
Wainwright founded The RealReal in 2011 from her home, growing the online consignment company into a globally recognized brand with 16 retail locations and over $288 million in funding raised.
Wainwright was an early tech entrepreneur, starting her career at Clorox before heading up Reel.com, an online video website in 1997. In 1999, she took over as the CEO of Pets.com but became a victim of the dot-com bubble after the site went public and then collapsed in 2000. After leaving Pets.com, Wainwright was involved in a number of other tech startups before launching The RealReal.
The inspiration for The RealReal came from a shopping trip with a friend where Wainwright says the friend spent “over $5,000 in 20 minutes” in the consignment section of a boutique. The online e-commerce site is now a trusted source for buying and selling pre-owned luxury items from clothing and jewelry to home decor and artwork.
Wainwright has received a number of awards for her work with The RealReal, including being named one of Tech Crunch’s 40 Over 40 Silicon Valley Entrepreneurs, The San Francisco Times’ Top Female Entrepreneur in 2013, one of the San Francisco Business Times’ Most Admired CEOs and receiving the FashInvest Innovation Award.
Wainwright holds a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University.
