Director of Tesla

Kimbal Musk is a chef, restaurateur, and entrepreneur, as well as the younger brother of Elon Musk and a major shareholder of Tesla.

He owns The Kitchen Restaurant Group, a collection of restaurant concepts in markets including Colorado, Chicago, and Memphis.

Musk is also the co-founder of Big Green, a nonprofit that has built hundreds of outdoor classrooms called "Learning Gardens" across America. He also co-founded an urban farming company, Square Roots, in Brooklyn, New York, that grows food in hydroponic, climate-controlled shipping containers.

One of his first entrepreneurial ventures was in 1995, when he and his brother, Elon, co-founded the software company Zip2. In 1999, Compaq acquired the company for $307 million.

Musk went on to enroll at the French Culinary Institute in New York City, and in 2004, he opened The Kitchen Boulder (Boulder, Colorado) with his partners, Jen Lewin and Hugo Matheson, and co-founded The Kitchen Restaurant Group. The Kitchen has been named one of "America's Top Restaurants" by Food & Wine, Zagat’s, Gourmet, the James Beard Foundation, and OpenTable.

The Kitchen Group includes restaurants such as Next Door, Hedge Row, and The Kitchen, serving real food at various price points. They source their ingredients from local farmers, and have a mission to provide real food for everyone and empower the next generation of farmers.

The Kitchen Group’s restaurants each donate a percentage of their sales toward the establishment of Learning Gardens in their communities.

In 2011, Musk opened Next Door American Eatery in downtown Boulder as an urban-casual, American concept, now with ten locations and counting. That same year, Musk and Matheson established their nonprofit, Big Green. As of 2019, the nonprofit is in seven American cities with close to 600 schools, impacting more than 300,000 students. Through Big Green, Musk established an international holiday, Plant a Seed Day.

Musk currently serves on the boards of Tesla and SpaceX. He previously sat on the board of Chipotle from 2013 to 2019.
