In 2011, Musk opened Next Door American Eatery in downtown Boulder as an urban-casual, American concept, now with ten locations and counting. That same year, Musk and Matheson established their nonprofit, Big Green. As of 2019, the nonprofit is in seven American cities with close to 600 schools, impacting more than 300,000 students. Through Big Green, Musk established an international holiday, Plant a Seed Day.
Musk was named a 2017 Social Entrepreneur by the Schwab Foundation, a sister organization to the World Economic Forum (WEF), for his impactful, scalable work to bring Real Food to Everyone. In 2018, he was named a Global Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the WEF.
Musk currently serves on the boards of Tesla and SpaceX. He previously sat on the board of Chipotle from 2013 to 2019.
Musk married his business partner, Jen Lewin, and the couple had three children together but ended up divorcing. He currently lives in Boulder, Colorado, and is married to Christiana Wyly, daughter of billionaire Sam Wyly.
