John Douglas Field is the vice president of special projects at Apple, Inc., a role he has held since 2018.
As VP for special products, Field has worked on Apple’s secretive “Project Titan,” the technology company’s autonomous car.
Between 2013 and 2018, he headed the programs pushing development of new vehicles for electric car manufacturer, Tesla.
Previously, Field served as VP of product design at Apple between 2008 and 2013, where he oversaw the development of Mac hardware including the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, AppleTV, iMac, and AirPort products.
Earlier in his career, he served as VP of design and engineering and chief technology officer at Segway. While there, Field was responsible for the development of the Segway Personal Transporter and led the research and development of future Segway products between 1999 and 2008.
Field began his career as a development engineer and team leader at Ford Motor Company. He focused on the development of handling, ride, vibration, and noise characteristics for various vehicle platforms.
He then became the manager of process development for Johnson & Johnson Medical, a position that led him to introduce advanced manufacturing processes for high-volume medical devices. His success in medical engineering led him to join DEKA Research & Development in 1996. Field led the INDEPENDENCE iBOTA Mobility System’s technical leadership and prototype design.
In 2016, Field was selected as the executive-in-residence for the University of Southern Indiana’s Romain College of Business.
Field was a fellow in the dual degree leaders for manufacturing program—a partnership between the MIT School of Engineering, the MIT Sloan School of Management, and major manufacturing companies. He holds an M.B.A. and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from MIT, as well as a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University.
