Richard Anderson is the former CEO of Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Anderson is credited as the main driver behind the Delta and Northwest merger, thus responsible for creating the world’s largest airline.
Prior to Northwest and Delta, Anderson gained his first airline industry experience at Continental Airlines beginning in 1987. He had been working as a prosecutor in Harris County, Texas with no vision of a corporate career, but took a chance on an open position in Continental’s legal department.
Anderson joined Northwest Airlines in 1990 as deputy general counsel, and by 2001 he held the role of CEO. He took a brief hiatus from the airline industry between 2004 and 2007 to work for United Healthcare, but he returned to Delta in 2007, going on to manage its 2008 merger with Northwest. He remained with Delta as CEO and executive chairman of its board of directors until 2016.
In 2017, he joined Amtrak as president and CEO under a three-year contract. Anderson took no compensation from Amtrak, and his role was to help bolster the passenger railroad giant which was facing cutbacks and uncertain financing. He stepped down in March 2020 after fulfilling his contract.
Anderson has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the Tony Jannus Award for distinguished service in the commercial airline industry in 2013, and recognition as Aviation Week’s “Person of the Year” in 2015. Additionally, Delta was named to Fortune’s “Most Admired Airlines” list in both 2011 and 2013, under his leadership.
He has served on a variety of boards, including the International Air Transport Association Board of Governors, Medtronic Inc., and Cargill. He also served as chairman of the board of directors for Airlines for America.
A native of Galveston, Texas, Anderson earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston, Clear Lake and his J.D. from the South Texas College of Law.
