Kris Smith is interim president and chief executive officer of Suncor Energy Inc.
Since joining Suncor in 2000, Kris has held a variety of roles, his most recent being executive vice president of Downstream. Kris also previously held positions in the General Counsel’s office and leading business services, strategic planning, and business development in Suncor’s US downstream business. In 2007, Kris joined Suncor’s Oil Sands business where he held increasingly senior roles managing business services, strategic planning, production planning and logistics, and the operation of Suncor’s power generation, transmission assets and utility operations. Prior to EVP Downstream, Kris was Senior Vice-President of Supply, Trading and Corporate Development, accountable for corporate strategic planning, crude supply and marketing, as well as the corporate process and information office.
Kris obtained his bachelor of arts with honours from the University of Alberta in 1992, and his bachelor of laws from Dalhousie University in 1995. Kris has also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. Prior to joining Suncor, Kris was a lawyer at a respected law firm in Calgary, Alberta and has also been a member of both the Alberta and Colorado bars.
Kris sits on the board of directors for the Canadian Fuels Association, the association for Canada’s petroleum refining, distribution and marketing sector. Kris also sits on the board of directors of Actua, Canada’s largest science, technology, engineering and mathematics youth outreach organization and Evok Innovations, a technology and innovation fund established by Suncor Energy and Cenovus.
