Sarah Friar is the CEO of Nextdoor—a privately held company that describes itself as “the world’s largest private network for the neighborhood,” working to promote better communication between people who live in the same neighborhood. She previously served as CFO of Square.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, NextDoor grew to 10 million users in 11 different countries, undoubtedly spurred by the inability of many to congregate in large groups or participate in their usual social activities.
Friar joined the company in 2018, after her tenure at Square, during which she helped launch the company’s 2015 IPO, adding $30 billion in market capitalization. She served as CEO Jack Dorsey’s counterpart during her time with the payment company, working to establish a culture of entrepreneurship and building up the organization’s ecosystems of businesses and partners.
Prior to Square, Friar held a variety of leadership positions in companies such as Salesforce and Goldman Sachs, as well as McKinsey & Company in both South Africa and London.
She currently sits on the boards of Walmart and Slack and is the co-founder of Ladies Who Launch in 2013—a non-profit that supports, celebrates, and educates women entrepreneurs around the world.
Friar was born in Northern Ireland, and she was the first in her family to attend university. She studied economics at Oxford and went on to earn her M.B.A. from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, graduating as an Arjay Miller scholar.
