Stewart Butterfield is a Canadian entrepreneur and businessman, and the co-founder of photo-sharing website, Flickr, and channel-based messaging application, Slack.
Born Dharma Jeremy Butterfield, he spent the first five years of his life in a small village in British Columbia, living in a commune. After his family moved from the commune to Victoria, they got a computer, and Butterfield became fixated by the technology, teaching himself how to code. At age 12, he changed his name to Daniel Stewart Butterfield.
Butterfield attended St. Michael's University School in Victoria, and he then went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from the University of Victoria and a Master of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge.
In 2002, he co-founded Ludicorp with his then-wife, Caterina Fake, and friend, Jason Classon. They created an online game, Game Neverending, that was quickly abandoned in favor of Flickr—a photo-sharing service developed by Cal Henderson and Eric Costello. As Flickr’s co-founder and CEO, Butterfield grew the company into one of the largest web services in the world.
Yahoo acquired Flickr in 2005, and Butterfield was brought on as Flickr’s general manager and senior director of project management. He left in 2008 and founded Tiny Speck with $1.5 million in seed money. The company’s first product—an online game called Glitch—failed to attract an audience or buyer and was eventually scrapped.
However, while creating Glitch, Butterfield and his partners developed an internal messaging system that would be the key to their success. Slack Technologies was established in 2009 with Butterfield as its CEO. The application, Slack, launched in 2013, and it has since transformed business communication.
Butterfield was listed among Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World, and BusinessWeek's Top 50 Leaders. He has also been included on Vanity Fair’s New Establishment List, Advertising Age’s Creativity 50, the Recode 100, and was named Technology Innovator of the Year by the Wall Street Journal.
Butterfield has served in the W3C's XForms working group and is active in many other professional organizations. He is a frequent speaker on design and technology at professional and academic events across Europe and North America.
In 2019, Butterfield oversaw Slack’s public offering. After the first day of trading, the market value was about $19.5 billion.
In December 2020, Slack was acquired by Salesforce for $27.7 billion. Butterfield is expected to join Salesforce’s executive team in the acquisition.
