David Shaw is the founder of D. E. Shaw & Co., a hedge fund described by Fortune as "the most intriguing and mysterious force on Wall Street." Additionally, he is the chief scientist for D.E. Shaw Research, which is engaged in scientific research and technological development in the field of computational biochemistry.
Shaw worked as a vice president for Morgan Stanley, as well as serving on Columbia University’s computer science faculty until 1986, when he set out on his own to pursue computational finance. He founded D.E. Shaw & Co. in 1988 and was dubbed “King Quant” by Fortune in 1996 because of the firm's pioneering role in high-speed quantitative trading.
Shaw initiated his work on computational biochemistry, specifically molecular dynamics simulations of proteins, in 2001, and he began building his scientific team at D. E. Shaw Research in 2002. A few years later in 2005, he reinitiated his affiliation with Columbia. He currently serves as a senior research fellow and an adjunct professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics.
In 1994, Shaw was appointed to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology by President Clinton, and in 2009, he joined the council again under President Obama. Additionally, in 2012, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a recipient of the ACM Gordon Bell Prize.
Shaw holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego and a Ph.D. from Stanford University.
