Marc Benioff is the founder and CEO of Salesforce—a Fortune 500 company and the world’s leading customer relationship management (CRM) software provider.
Born in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1964, Benioff’s career in tech began at an early age. At just 14 years old, he developed and sold his first application, How to Juggle, for $75. One year later, he started a video game company, Liberty Software. The royalties he earned were enough to put him through college at the University of Southern California (USC).
While at USC, Benioff also got his first experience working for a major tech company, landing an internship at Apple in the summer of 1984. Two years later, after graduating with his B.S. in business administration, he began his post-grad career at Oracle where he moved quickly through the ranks. Starting out in customer service, it took him just a few years to earn the role of vice president—the youngest in company history at age 26.
When he founded Salesforce in 1999, it was with the intention of building a company that did things differently. Salesforce is a pioneer in the realm of online software hosting, with Forbes naming it the Most Innovative Company, and Benioff, Innovator of the Decade.
Beyond its commitment to developing exceptional products, Salesforce aims to make an impact on people’s lives. With the unique 1-1-1 philanthropy model that Benioff developed, the company is able to generate meaningful change in communities worldwide. Salesforce has become a leader in the philanthropic space, with over 9,000 companies now following the 1-1-1 model.
Benioff’s philanthropy extends beyond Salesforce as well. He and his wife, Lynne, give generously to causes such as children’s health, public education, the environment and homelessness. Together, they have pledged over $250 million to build the University of California, San Francisco for the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals in San Francisco and Oakland. They also established the Benioff Ocean Initiative at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Benioff currently sits on USC’s board of trustees, and in 2014, the university gave him an honorary doctorate. He currently lives in San Francisco, California with Lynne and their two children.
