John Roos is the former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, the founder of venture capital firm, Geodesic Capital, and a member of Salesforce’s board of directors.
Ambassador Roos is an attorney and businessman with wide-ranging executive and advisory experience.
He served as ambassador to Japan during President Barack Obama’s first term. Roos was the first sitting U.S. ambassador to attend the ceremony commemorating the bombing of Hiroshima. His time in Tokyo also coincided with Japan’s catastrophic earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis in March 2011.
Following these tragedies, Ambassador Roos led America’s efforts to support Japan. He also directed the creation of the Tomodachi Initiative, a public-private partnership dedicated to promoting young Japanese and American leaders through education and cultural exchange programs.
In recognition of his effective leadership in times of crisis, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton bestowed Roos with the Sue M. Cobb Award for Exemplary Diplomatic Service in 2011. He also received the Distinguished Public Service Award in 2014, awarded by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus in recognition of his leadership of Operation Tomodachi, the United States’ humanitarian partnership with Japan, and his efforts to build a deeper security relationship between the two countries.
After returning from Japan, Ambassador Roos co-founded a venture capital firm, Geodesic Capital. He also founded an investment and advisory firm, The Roos Group, of which he is CEO.
Ambassador Roos is a senior adviser to Centerview Partners, and in 2013, he joined Salesforce’s board of directors. He also sits on the boards of the Mansfield Foundation, Sony Corporation, and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group. He is an advisor to the Toyota Research Institute and the Stanford Center for Asian Health Research and Education.
Prior to his service in Japan, he was CEO and senior partner at the law firm of Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich, & Rosati.
Ambassador Roos earned both his B.A. in political science and his J.D. at Stanford University.
