Benjamin Silbermann is the co-founder and CEO of Pinterest.
Growing up, he loved collecting stamps and insects, and that love of collecting was the genesis of the visual discovery engine. Silbermann co-founded Pinterest with Evan Sharp and Paul Sciarra in 2009, and the trio launched the initial desktop version of the photo bookmarking site the following year.
After Pinterest’s launch, the site had a low user base and limited engagement. In an uncommon move for a tech founder, Silbermann personally connected with users to understand what they appreciated about the platform, and he tailored its continued development around their feedback. The founder intentionally prioritized Pinterest’s online curation and discovery utility instead of turning it into yet another social networking platform, a move that proved to be the central reason millions of users joined the platform.
Silbermann took Pinterest public in 2019 resulting in an expectation-beating valuation of over $12 billion. In 2021, the site had over 450 million monthly users.
In 2003, Silbermann began his career in IT and infrastructure consulting for Fortune 1000 companies at CEB—now Gartner. He then joined Google in 2006 where he worked on developing the tech giant’s online advertising group, AdSense.
Silbermann left Google in 2008 to develop iPhone apps with Paul Sciarra. The pair’s initial application, Tote, failed to gain serious traction as a shopping app. Instead, users adopted the platform as a way to find items they liked and save photos for future shopping—the basis behind Pinterest.
Silbermann holds a bachelor of arts degree from Yale University.
