James Truchard is the former chairman, president, and CEO of National Instruments, the software company he co-founded in 1976.
National Instruments produces testing equipment for scientists and engineers across a spectrum of industries. During Truchard’s tenure, the company focused on developing tools to increase productivity, discovery, and innovation in the scientific and engineering worlds. Truchard’s career began in 1970 while he was earning his master’s degree and doctorate at the University of Texas. While there, he worked at the UT Applied Research Laboratories as a managing director in acoustical measurements. He went on to found National Instruments with a team of three and grew the company to over 7,000 employees worldwide by the time of his retirement in 2019.
Truchard has been recognized by Forbes as one of “America’s Favorite Bosses,” and he received the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship. He was also inducted into Electronic Design’s Engineering Hall of Fame and was elected as an IEEE fellow.
Additionally, National Instruments was named one of Fortune’s “100 Best Places to Work,” and it was listed among the top 25 of the “World’s Best Multinational Workplaces,” according to the Great Places to Work Institute.
Truchard is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. He received his B.S. and M.S. in physics and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
