Ronald J. Forest was appointed President of Matson in 2017. He is responsible for all of the company's operations, including vessels, terminals, container equipment, labor relations, safety, environmental compliance, quality, security, purchasing and engineering.  Forest's career in the maritime industry began in 1978, including nine years with United States Lines and eight years with American Presidents Line (APL). His Matson career began in 1995 as operations manager, Southern California. He was promoted in 1996 to area manager, Northern California, and was made a vice president of Matson Navigation Company in 1998. That same year he assumed the responsibility of overseeing the company's labor relations and was later promoted to vice president, area manager, Southern California. In 2000, Forest was promoted to president and chief executive officer of Matson Logistics and transferred to Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. As head of Matson Logistics, Forest was responsible for overseeing the management and continued growth of Matson's largest subsidiary. In 2002, Forest transferred back to Matson as head of the company's operations division, as well as overseeing Matson's investment in SSAT, a West Coast stevedoring joint venture with SSA Marine. He was promoted to senior vice president in 2003. Forest has a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California, Irvine. He is also a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program. He serves on the board of directors of the Pacific Maritime Association. He also serves on the boards of the Hawaii State Chapter of the American Red Cross and the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association.

The Ocean Transportation segment offers ocean freight transportation services to the domestic non-contiguous economies of Hawaii, Japan, Alaska, and Guam, as well as to other island economies in Micronesia. This segment also operates an expedited service from China to Long Beach, California, and various islands in the South Pacific, as well as Okinawa, Japan; and provides stevedoring, refrigerated cargo services, inland transportation, container equipment maintenance, and other terminal services to ocean carriers on the Hawaiian islands of Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai, as well as in the Alaska locations of Anchorage, Kodiak, and Dutch Harbor. In addition, it offers vessel management and container transshipment services. The Logistics segment provides multimodal transportation brokerage services, including domestic and international rail intermodal, long-haul and regional highway trucking, specialized hauling, flat-bed and project, less-than-truckload, and expedited freight services; less-than-container load consolidation and freight forwarding services; warehousing and distribution services; supply chain management services, and non-vessel operating common carrier freight forwarding services. It serves the U.S. military, freight forwarders, retailers, consumer goods, automobile manufacturers, and other customers. The company was formerly known as Alexander & Baldwin Holdings, Inc. and changed its name to Matson, Inc. in June 2012. Matson, Inc. was founded in 1882 and is headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii.
