Sehat Sutardja is the CEO of FLC Technology Group, which is based in Santa Clara County, California.
Sutardja has been at the helm of FLC since 2017, but he is best known as the founder and CEO of Marvell Semiconductor.
After meeting his wife while they were both attending the University of California, Berkeley, the couple, along with Sutardja’s brother Pantas, started the semiconductor company in 1995. The company originally specialized in producing read channels for computer disk drives, but eventually moved on to develop a variety of technologies that can now be found in computers, smart phones, televisions, Wi-Fi systems and more. Sutardja served as Marvell’s president from its inception until 2013 and as chairman of the board from 2003 until 2016.
In 2000, he led Marvell through a successful IPO after achieving record-breaking sales and scale in the five years since its founding. Marvell now has offices in over 15 countries with a revenue of over $3 billion annually.
However, by 2016, Sutardja and his wife were forced out of the company amid an internal accounting investigation. Marvell’s board of directors found a series of reverses, including accounting issues, that prompted the investigation. An audit committee identified “tone at the top” problems that included management pressure on sales and finance teams to meet revenue goals, and they fired Sutardja and Dai as a result. No evidence of fraud was found in the accounting investigation.
Sutardja developed an interest in electronics early on, becoming a certified radio repair technician by the age of 13 in his home country of Indonesia. When it became apparent that the United States held the best opportunities for continuing his studies, he immigrated to attend Iowa State University. He has since been lauded for his contributions to the industry, including being named Inventor of the Year in 2006 by the Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association, receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Iowa State University Alumni Association in 2010, and being awarded the Indonesian Diaspora Lifetime Achievement Award for Global Pioneering and Innovation in 2012.
Sutardja is also a fellow of IEEE, and he has been awarded over 350 U.S. patents in the course of his career. He received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University and his master of science and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from UC, Berkeley.
