Steven Markel is the chairman of Markel Corporation, a financial holding company which engages in underwriting insurance products for various niche markets. Markle has been in the role of chairman since 2020.

He previously served as vice chairman since 1992, and has been a board member since 1978. Additionally, he has held various senior leadership positions since the company’s 1986 IPO.

Prior to joining Markel he spent five years with Central Fidelity Bank. 

Additionally, Markel serves or has served on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business Foundation, the VCU Institute for Contemporary Art, the VCU Health System, Childfund International, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the board of trustees for the Collegiate School. 

Markel earned his B.S. in finance at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.
