Franz Fehrenbach was born on July 1, 1949, in Kenzingen (Breisgau), Germany. He is married and has three adult sons. After graduating from high school in 1968, he studied industrial engineering at the University of Karlsruhe, where he received his degree in 1975.

He is a member of the board of the Stifterverband, a joint initiative of German industries to promote science and higher education, a member of the supervisory board of BASF SE and of Stihl AG, a member of the advisory board of Stihl Holding AG & Co. KG, a member of the board of directors of Linde plc, as well as a member of the board of trustees of Stiftung Demoskopie Allensbach. He is also an advocate for education and entrepreneurship in his role as an honorary member of “Wissensfabrik – Unternehmen für Deutschland e.V.” This initiative brings companies and foundations together in order to prepare Germany’s next generation for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

In 2006, Fehrenbach was named “Eco-Manager of the Year” in the companies category by the environmental foundation WWF Deutschland and the German business magazine “Capital.” In 2008, Fehrenbach was singled out for the “Honorary Golden Steering Wheel” prize, which is awarded to outstanding personalities by a German newspaper. In 2009, he received the environment award presented by B.A.U.M., the German Environmental Management Association. On behalf of Bosch, he accepted the Award for Understanding and Tolerance of the Jewish Museum Berlin in the same year. The business magazine “Capital” presented Franz Fehrenbach with its “Greentech Manager of the Year 2011” award in February 2012.
