Thomas Peterffy is the chairman of Interactive Brokers, the world’s largest electronic broker, which he founded in 1995.
Born in Budapest in 1944, he immigrated to the United States in 1965. When he arrived, he took a position at a New York engineering firm. Peterffy’s first exposure to Wall Street was as a computer consultant for Aranyi Associates, which was owned by a fellow Hungarian immigrant working on stock and bond valuation programming. Additionally, Peterffy worked at commodities trader, Mocatta Metals, before going solo.
Peterffy purchased a seat on the American Stock Exchange in 1977 to trade options. A year later, he was working to automate the process, by using valuation sheets to improve the odds of profitable bidding on contracts. In 1982, he started a market making firm called Timber Hill, using hand held computers he had developed to track and calculate trades. By the late 1980s, he had branched into new markets, such as the early Chicago S&P 500 options pits.
Several years later, Peterffy expanded into Asia and Europe, opening what is known today as Interactive Brokers in 1995 to facilitate individual investors’ electronic trades. Along with his minority partners, Peterffy sold off 10 percent of his controlling partnership of Interactive Brokers in its public offering in 2007.
Peterffy served as CEO of the company until 2019, when he became chairman. Interactive Brokers is consistently ranked among the Best Online Brokers by Barron’s, as well as other outlets.
