Jack A. Markell served from 2009-2017 as the Governor of Delaware, leading a $4 billion enterprise with 30,000 employees. During his tenure, Delaware emerged from the great recession with the strongest job growth in the region and among the best private sector wage growth in the country. Mr. Markell was particularly focused on improving Delaware's schools and positioning its citizens for future prosperity by launching and scaling important workforce development efforts. Before he was elected Governor, Mr. Markell served ten years as Delaware's State Treasurer.
Prior to public service, Mr. Markell helped lead the wireless technology revolution as the 13th employee at Nextel (a name he coined), where he served as Senior Vice President for Corporate Development, responsible for hundreds of merger and acquisition transactions valued in the billions of dollars, equity financings (including the company's IPO) and strategic planning. He was also responsible for the Investor Relations function, where he had significant interaction with Wall Street and the investor community. His other business experience includes a senior management position at Comcast Corporation, where he conceived of and implemented a highly successful investment in fallow radio spectrum, yielding a return of approximately $150 million on an investment of $2 million. He also worked as an associate at McKinsey and Company and as a banker at First Chicago Corporation.

Mr. Markell was born in 1960 in Newark, Delaware. He graduated from Newark High School where he met his wife, Carla. He went on to receive an undergraduate degree in economics and development studies from Brown University and an MBA from the University of Chicago. Mr. Markell is a Henry Crown Fellow and a Rodel Fellow at the Aspen Institute. He and his wife reside in Wilmington Delaware. Their two children, Molly and Michael, are in their 20's.
