Howard Ungerleider Biography and Net Worth

Howard Ungerleider is President and Chief Financial Officer for Dow, a global materials science company with 2021 sales of approximately $55 billion. In this role, he serves as a member of Dow’s most senior executive committee that sets the strategic direction, defines priorities, establishes corporate policy, and manages governance and enterprise-level decisions for the company. He has executive oversight for Dow Finance, Public Affairs, Government Affairs, Purchasing, and Integrated Supply Chain.

From September 2017 until April 2019, Ungerleider also served as Chief Financial Officer of DowDuPont, an $86 billion holding company comprised of The Dow Chemical Company and DuPont, created with the intent to subsequently form three independent, publicly traded companies in materials science, agriculture and specialty products sectors. On April 1, 2019, Dow separated from DowDuPont.

Ungerleider joined Dow in 1990 and his career has spanned a wide variety of commercial, business, financial, geographic, functional and enterprise-level leadership roles. In 1997, he relocated to Dow's European headquarters in Switzerland, where he had management responsibilities for several of Dow's specialty polyolefin brands. Ungerleider was named Business Director for Dow's global Wire and Cable Compounds business in 2000, and in 2004, he became the Global Director of Integrated Supply Chain for Plastics, Performance Chemicals and Thermosets. In 2006, he was appointed North American Commercial Vice President for Dow's $6 billion Basic Plastics business portfolio.

From 2008 to 2011, Ungerleider served as Vice President of Investor Relations, where he was responsible for creating and driving an investor outreach program about Dow's strategic transformation and performance in the midst of the worst global economic crisis in decades. In this role, he was also a member of the Finance leadership team, providing counsel and support to Dow's Chief Financial Officer.

He was named President for Dow’s Performance Plastics Division in 2011. In 2012, he was named Executive Vice President of Dow’s Advanced Materials Division and joined Dow’s senior-most executive team. Under his leadership, the Advanced Materials businesses grew to more than $11 billion in sales across more than 130 countries. He was elected as CFO by Dow’s Board of Directors in 2014 and was named Vice Chairman in 2015. He was appointed CFO of DowDuPont in May 2016 effective upon the close of the merger transaction between Dow and DuPont, which occurred on August 31, 2017.

A vocal advocate for a safe, inclusive and supportive workplace for all employees, Ungerleider serves as the executive sponsor for WIN – Dow’s employee resource group for the equality and advancement of women in the workplace. In 2021, he was named #9 on the HERoes 50 Advocates List published annually by Yahoo Finance and INvolve. He previously served for more than a decade as the executive sponsor for GLAD – the company’s resource group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees and allies.

Ungerleider earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas in Austin and a master’s degree in Business Administration from University of California in Los Angeles. He is chairman of the Dow Company Foundation and serves on the Board of Directors for Kyndryl, FCLTGlobal, the Michigan Israel Business Bridge, Mid-Michigan Baseball Foundation, Keep America Beautiful, and the Board of Trustees of The Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation. Howard is chair of the Business Leaders for Michigan business roundtable and a member of the Michigan Climate Executive Advisory Group and the Michigan ESG Leadership Council.
