Dagmar Dolby is the widow of American sound pioneer and founder of Dolby Laboratories, Ray Dolby. She was born in Germany and met her future husband while attending a summer language program at Cambridge University, where he was pursuing his Ph.D in physics.
In 1965, Ray founded Dolby Laboratories, an audio technology firm that would be a trailblazer of noise reduction and surround sound technologies.
After founding the company in London, Dolby moved its headquarters to San Francisco in 1976. Dolby’s signature noise reduction system, the Dolby NR, is named for him. He is also recognized for his work in helping to develop the first video tape ever recorded while working for Ampex, an electronics company that hired him at age 16.
The couple became known for their philanthropy after donating $16 million in 2006 to help launch the Ray and Dagmar Dolby Regeneration Medicine Building at the University of California, San Francisco. In 2011, they donated an additional $20 million to the university.
When Ray was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2010, the family donated $21 million to the California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) In 2012, they founded the Ray Dolby Brain Health Center, a collaboration between CPMC and the Alzheimer’s Association. In 2013, at the age of 80, Ray died of leukemia.
Dagmar is the largest shareholder of Dolby Laboratories, owning around 37 percent, and since her husband’s passing, she has continued the family’s philanthropic efforts. Since 2015, she has pledged more than $160 million to Cambridge University, and in 2018, she gave $20 million to UC, San Francisco for the Dolby Family Center for Mood Disorders.
Her philanthropic causes include reproductive rights, brain health research, and educational opportunities, among other areas. She has also signed The Giving Pledge, committing to donate a major portion of her estate to charitable causes.
Dolby holds a bachelor’s degree from Heidelberg University. She continues to live in San Francisco and has two sons, David and Tom.
