Chris Merrywell serves as senior executive vice president of Columbia Banking System and president, consumer banking of Umpqua Bank, and he served as executive vice president, chief operating officer of Columbia Banking System and Columbia Bank from January 1, 2020 until 2023’s merger with Umpqua. Mr. Merrywell joined Columbia in 2012 as director of wealth management. He took on increasing levels of responsibility and leadership in his subsequent years with the bank before his 2017 promotion to executive vice president, chief consumer banking officer with oversight of the company’s wealth management, private & healthcare banking, and retail banking divisions.

Prior to joining Columbia, Mr. Merrywell spent five years as the regional managing director of wealth markets for Union Bank in the Northwest, and he also held management positions at Harris Private Bank. Mr. Merrywell began his 35-year career in the banking industry as a teller at U.S. Bank. Continued promotions in the retail division moved him from managing branches to districts before his transition to private banking and wealth management with the bank.

Mr. Merrywell holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Arizona State University, and he is a graduate of the Pacific Coast Banking School. He is actively involved with Bellarmine Preparatory High School and Bloodworks Northwest, and his past nonprofit organization affiliations include the Tacoma Art Museum.
