Langley Steinert is the founder and CEO of CarGurus and the co-founder of TripAdvisor.
After graduating from Georgetown University with his B.A., he spent three and a half years as a Wall Street investment banker. Discouraged by the long hours and lack of work-life balance, he decided to pursue his M.B.A. as a pathway to the software industry.
He attended Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business where he was impressed by the diversity of his classmates and their experiences. Still determined to go into software, he took a part-time consulting role at Lotus Development Corp. in Boston, where he ended up working for three years.
He then spent the next four years at various early-stage startups in Boston, including Papyrus and Viaweb. After Yahoo purchased Viaweb in 1998, Steinert joined a venture capital firm in Cambridge where he met his soon-to-be business partner, Stephen Kaufer.
In 2000, the pair founded TripAdvisor, the world’s largest online travel community with $4 million. Four years later, they sold it to Expedia/IAC for $210 million.
Steinert launched CarGurus in 2006 with $5 million, with the goal of simplifying the car shopping experience. It has since grown to become one of the leading global automotive marketplaces. The company went public in October 2017 with a $150 million IPO. Steinert remains in the role of CEO as well as chairman of the board of directors.
