Gillian Tans is the chairwoman of Booking.com, the Amsterdam-based travel booking company she joined in 2002.
As chairwoman, Tans advises company leadership on long-term vision and operations along with key growth initiatives. She was appointed chairwoman in 2019 after stepping down from her previous role as president and CEO. As CEO, she spent over three years working in the spheres of global strategy and operations for Booking.com—managing all business units within the organization.
Prior to her tenure as CEO, Tans held various roles at the helm of Booking.com, including as CIO, and in the IT, content, customer care, and global sales departments. When Tans joined Booking.com, the company was a small, shoestring travel-booking operation based out of Amsterdam. She worked tirelessly to open the organization’s second office in Barcelona, where early on, she set up a bedroom in the apartment the team was operating out of to get more done during her monthly visits to Spain. During her tenure, Booking.com has grown to more than 10,000 employees in 174 offices worldwide.
With her over 18-year history with the company, Tans has become one of the highest-paid executives in the online travel industry. Her compensation in 2018 alone totaled $14.7 million, an approximate 6 percent increase from the previous year. Due to her success at Booking.com, she was recognized on Dutch Technology’s “50 Most Inspiring Women” list.
Before joining Booking.com, Tans spent four years with Golden Tulip Hotels, an international hotel group, where she served as director of sales, product manager, and marketing manager. She also worked with numerous independent hotels as part of the Intercontinental Hotel Group.
Tans began her career in hospitality working for Hershey Entertainment and Resorts in Hershey, Pennsylvania. She is a graduate of the Hotel Management School in Middelburg, Netherlands, and speaks English, Dutch, French and German fluently. Tans currently serves on the boards of Techleapnl and Farfetch.
