Gene Mergelmeyer is executive vice president, chief operating officer for Assurant, Inc. and a member of the company’s Management Committee. In this role, he oversees Assurant’s, global technology – and other centers of excellence including operations transformation, customer experience, digital, data analytics and artificial intelligence - and also has oversight for large strategic initiatives across Assurant. He is credited with architecting Assurant’s enterprise operating model structure that underscores the company’s commitment to further integration, enhanced agility and a stronger brand across the world.
Previously, Mr. Mergelmeyer served as president and chief executive officer of Assurant’s Housing business, overseeing its organic growth, the development of its risk management service offerings and expansion into adjacent businesses within the mortgage and multifamily housing industries. Under his leadership, the specialty property business more than doubled its revenue.
In 2014, Mr. Mergelmeyer, who has more than 30 years of experience in financial services and insurance, was named executive vice president of Assurant. In this capacity, he added responsibility for the company’s technology infrastructure and the Enterprise Transformation Group, which explored new ways to deliver customer service, technology, finance and vendor management services.
Mr. Mergelmeyer joined Assurant in 1997 when the company acquired Insureco, where he served as chief financial officer. Previously, he held senior management positions at a division of Transamerica and at the public accounting firm Peat Marwick, now KPMG.
Mr. Mergelmeyer shares Assurant’s commitment to community and has championed the company’s efforts in support of Habitat for Humanity and Junior Achievement of Georgia. He is a longtime supporter of the Orange County United Way, the Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation in Bloomingdale, Ill., the Blind Children’s Learning Center in Los Angeles, and Children’s Hospitals of Orange County and Los Angeles.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California State University - Long Beach. As announced in September 2021, Gene will retire from Assurant at the end of 2021 after 34 years of service.
