Bradley Wayne Hughes (known by his middle name, Wayne) is the founder of self-storage company, Public Storage, and American Homes 4 Rent, a single-family rental home REIT.
In 1972, Hughes and partner, Kenneth Volk Jr., jointly invested $50,000 to open a storage facility in El Cajon, California. From there, Hughes used the facility as a launching pad to found the largest self-storage brand in the U.S., Public Storage.
Known for their bright orange signs, Public Storage operates as a real estate investment trust (REIT) running over 2,200 self-storage facilities in North America and Europe. Hughes led the company as president and co-CEO in 1981 and became chairman and sole CEO in 1991. The billionaire retired as Public Storage’s CEO in 2002 and has remained the company’s chairman emeritus since.
Hughes currently owns less than one percent of Public Storage shares and has gifted a majority of his former shares to his children, Tamara Hughes Gustavson and Wayne Hughes Jr.
In 2012, the billionaire businessman founded single-family rental home REIT, American Homes 4 Rent. As of 2020, the real estate investment company owned over 50,000 homes across the U.S. with a large presence in Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Charlotte. As one of the earliest entrants to the single-family investment space, Hughes took the company public in 2013 and merged with American Residential Properties, Inc. in 2016.
Hughes serves on the board of directors at his alma mater, the University of Southern California, and he has also given a major gift of $400 million. He was also the donor behind a $5 million gift to USC’s basketball program, naming its court after his high school classmate, friend, and student athlete, Jim Sterkel.
The philanthropist also created and funded the Parker Hughes Cancer Center in Minnesota, which focuses on the treatment and drug development for children’s leukemia and cancer.
Since 1972, Hughes has owned thoroughbred racehorses including 2020 Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, Authentic.
