Ernest Rady is the founder, president, CEO and chairman of American Assets Inc.
Rady founded the publicly-traded real estate investment trust (REIT) in 1967 and has grown it to a $2.8 billion company. He led American Assets through its 2011 IPO, and has served as its chairman, president, and CEO since 2015. From 2011 to 2015 he was the executive chairman of the board of directors.
With over 50 years of experience in real estate management and development, Rady has been at the helm of 12 different companies throughout his career. That includes founding Insurance Company of the West in 1972, which became a high growth property and casualty carrier (now known as ICW Group Holdings). Additionally, Rady also founded and served as chairman and CEO of Westcorp, a publicly-traded financial services company that sold to Wachovia Corporation in 2006.
Canadian born and educated, Rady has been affiliated with a number of Canadian companies in addition to the U.S. companies he founded and led. His past roles include principal for the San Diego Padres Baseball Club, principal of Summit Resources LLC, director of Washovia Corp, principal of Smith Energy Services Inc, chairman of Wells Fargo Dealer Services Inc, chairman and CEO of Western Financial Bank and chairman and treasurer of Rady Children’s Hospital and Health Center of San Diego.
Rady is also known for his philanthropy in the San Diego community. In 2014, he was named the San Diego Person of the Year by U-T San Diego because of his philanthropic work in the city, including a gift from his family of $120 million to the Rady Children’s Hospital. The gift was used to establish the Rady Pediatric and Genomics and Systems Medicine Institute.
Other beneficiaries of Rady’s generosity include the UCSD Rady School of Management, the Salvation Army, and the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba. His other volunteer efforts have included serving as the chairman of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego, as a trustee of the Salk Institute for Biological Science and active roles in the Chief Executives Organization and YPO Gold.
Rady received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Manitoba, as well as an honorary degree of doctor of laws.
